In 18 years of living under the same roof, there was only one late-night, father-waking-son baseball celebration — and it wasn’t for a World Series victory or trade-deadline blockbuster.

It came on July 28, 1993, when Mets first baseman Eddie Murray hit a game-winning double that mercifully ended pitcher Anthony Young’s record-setting 27-game losing streak. For the better part of two seasons, we had suffered through Young’s agonizing run of misfortune. And now that it was over, we not only saluted Young’s salvation, but our own endurance.
